Stay in a Charming Historic Seed Factory

Our motto is simple: A great hotel is often defined by the sum of its details.

And speaking of details—our recent stay at Hotel Nell in the heart of Union Market, Washington, D.C., was filled with them. This charming boutique hotel weaves its rich, storied history into every corner, bringing its past to life in a way that feels both authentic and inspiring.

Once home to the historic Bolgiano Seed Company—named after its matriarch, Nell Bolgiano—Hotel Nell is deeply rooted in its storied past. The lobby is adorned with lush greenery and glass containers filled with colorful seeds, a nod to its heritage. A vintage machine for sorting seeds sits prominently in the lobby, bringing the building’s agricultural roots to life. Throughout the space, signage on the walls and in the elevators shares the history of the building. Even the smallest detail, like the room key enclosed in a seed packet, pays tribute to its legacy.

The entire space exudes a contemporary yet effortlessly cool vibe. As we explored each floor, we encountered inviting seating areas with plush chairs, vibrant accents, and captivating artwork. Our guestroom was both cozy and welcoming, offering the perfect retreat.

Stepping outside, we were immediately immersed in the lively energy of the Union Market District. A striking mural on the hotel’s brick facade reinforces its deep connection to this dynamic and artistic community.

Union Market is a vibrant hub of culture, cuisine, and shopping, rich with history and energy. We kicked off our stay with delicious Yucatán chicken tacos at Treehouse Rooftop in Hotel Nell, a Tulum-inspired dining spot offering stunning city views. Later, we wandered over to La Cosecha, a lively Latin market filled with incredible food, unique retail finds, and stunning art, where we enjoyed an evening cocktail.

Of course, we love great shopping. As book lovers, we couldn’t resist browsing the shelves at Politics and Prose before stopping by Salt & Sundry, which always has a great selection of home goods and jewelry from both local and global designers.

In short, we loved our stay at Hotel Nell. From its rich history and incredible cuisine to the vibrant market scene—and all the thoughtful details that make this unique hotel brand truly special!
